Residence permits 2020: extension 31 August
The extension to August 31, 2020 provided for by the Cura Italia Decree concerns residence permits expiring on January 31, including:
• permits for subordinate and self-employed work;
Exceptions are residence permits for seasonal work expiring between 23 February and 31 May 2020, the expiration of which is extended to 31 December 2020.
Finally, the terms of conversion of residence permits from study to subordinate work, from seasonal work to non-seasonal work were also extended to 31 August 2020, as well as the deadlines for all other types of conversion.
During this suspension period, any appointment for the issue or renewal of the residence permit was postponed to August 31st.
During the extension of the terms of expiry of the residence permits, the foreign citizen maintains every right connected with the regular presence in Italy. This means that it is possible, for example, to establish employment relationships or to conclude lease contracts. This rule does not apply to insurance policies linked to the residence permit application, the expiration of the coverage cannot be extended. It is advisable to stipulate another until 31 August 2020 in order for the foreign citizen to be covered in the event of illness and accident.
Renewals of residence permits must be requested within 60 days of the deadline which, by virtue of the provisions of the Cura Italia Decree, has been postponed to 31 August 2020.
However, it is advisable to check whether the competent Police Headquarters has already resumed normal activity, in order to make an appointment for the renewal of the permit. This in consideration of the enormous amount of work that will flow to the competent structures starting from September 1, 2020.
It should be noted that numerous police headquarters are resuming the delivery of residence permits already available before the COVID-19 emergency, reserving the right to communicate later the opening hours to the public for application or renewal practices, which in any case must be carried out in compliance virus containment measures.
